Desperately Seeking Doctors in Canada 1
Canada’s universal health care system was the envy of the world. But today five million Canadians don’t have a family doctor. As a result, when we get sick we either clog up hospital emergency rooms or go to walk-in clinics that don’t know our medial histories and can offer little continuity of care. The situation is already critical, and is about to get much worse–with a huge bulge of baby boom doctors about to retire, and younger doctors not inclined to sacrifice personal lives for their careers.
How did we get here? And how do we get back to the level of primary health care that we believe is our right as Canadian citizens? Filmmakers Sharon Bartlett and Maria LeRose set out on a cross country journey,talking to ordinary Canadians, doctors, and health care experts to investigate the present crisis , its causes and possible solutions.

The Canada Health …
The Canada Health Act Discriminates Against Injured
Workers By Excluding Them From “Access To Health Services Without Financial Or Other Barriers” By Excluding “Any Health Services That A Person Is? Entitled To And Eligible For Under Any Act Of The legislature Of A Province That Relates To Workers’ Or Workmen’s Compensation” And That This Leaves Injured Workers Vulnerable To Wrongdoing By The Workers Compensation System
Hey Canadians… …
Hey Canadians… Please consider health tourism in eastern countries…
Only if a lot of people do this, then the Govt. will be forced to come to terms with the reality!!!
I am not trying to influence you! You do the research and? you go where you want to go.
Only then you will know how good Canada is and also HOW dumb some important really are!!!
Mind that the Canadian DOLLAR is growing strong everyday!!!
I graduated from …
I graduated from Canada (now in the USA) in the? mid 80s and things were good. But it was apparent that forward planning after the baby boom retirement would be critical. That would have meant early investment (always cheaper) by increasing the size of medical schools thus graduating more qualified doctors. Now, in an economic downturn everything is more difficult and expensive including quick fixes like hiring from abroad, which never addresses the problem.
@Navywxman F.Y.I. …
@Navywxman F.Y.I. maybe you should keep your comments to yourself if you can’t get the facts straight…One of the ladies in this? video is my aunt, it’s real, not just a “PR” piece as you put it.
@CedrikTheManiac00 …
@CedrikTheManiac00 Obviously you are an idiot! You say that you have lived in Canada all of your life???? You can’t even spell!!
hahaha as normally …
hahaha as normally i heard from everyone, canada is lacking of? doctor, thats why i’m thinking of become one
I live in a small …
I live in a small community? in Alberta, Canada and when I moved here I found a doctor right away and when he moved away I found another right away. I am not doubting that it is hard to fins doctors in rural areas but I believe this to be the same in the States as well. Doctors would rather work in urban centers.
@juxtn lol, this …
@juxtn lol, this video is? pure bullshit finace by insurance compagny and pro-conservative…
hahah who the …
hahah who the made the documentary, the english conservative people agasint the health bill or some american insurance compagny??? dude im form canada born live here all my life, even if we wait a few hour when your only sick for a small thing doesnt bother me, if your reall? hurt we treat you in no time doesnt cost you a cents…. stupid american get a fuckign life
@Navywxman They …
@Navywxman They have access? to health care, just not to insurance.
As an American, …
As an American, most of my comments pertains to all 6 segments of this video combined, it seems odd I am preached to in my own country that Canadian government runs healthcare and that is why it is so bad. It sounds like there is too little government coordinating the system which seems to be mostly open to market forces determining availability. The video actually seems? to advocate more government involvement. I marvel at the civility and simplicity of one provincial plan covering everyone.
I am a fierce …
I am a fierce advocate of single payer but this video has it’s merits. Some places in Canada do have long waiting lines and few doctors. Partly because they can get rich here in the US but this is? solvable while keeping single payer. However we as progressives can’t ignore problems like this.
lol, so ironic, so …
lol, so ironic, so many people who wants to be doctors, but yet we still have a storage of doctors?
Exactly – they have …
Exactly – they have taken situation and try to portray it as this is how it is across the country. I honestly have no problem with what health care system the US has,? but the political right in the US resorts to cannibalizing their friendships abroad. If their position is really that strong, then why do they have to resort to such low tactics
I totally agree …
I totally agree with you.. BS. 9/10 canadians have a regular family physician they see.. the remaining? 1/10 either choose not to (prefer the walk-in clinic), don’t do enough research, or (in the rare case of smaller towns in the east), there aren’t enough doctors. So the problem isn’t universalized health care.. the problem is keeping more docs in the country ..I would even advocate opening more seats in med schools. I’ve heard our med selection process is more stringent here
@SparwoodApple Yeah …
@SparwoodApple Yeah I’m smelling plenty of BS from this video as well.
Seems like a typical PR piece by insurance industry to con people into spending more and getting less as is the case in the US.
Even if I believed the 5 million number (which I dont), try nearly 50 million in the US who not only dont have a family doctor but dont have healthcare period! Who if they get sick or injured can lose their savings,? retirement, home and their life thanks to the private insurance industry.
American health …
American health care? system is fare worse in so many ways …If anything it is the Conservatives …like or republicans that have been throwing wrenches into health care ? Seems the right makes a mess of things no matter what country there in
@SparwoodApple Just …
@SparwoodApple Just some of the many Doctors accepting new patients in Chatham Ontario.? Bullshit this lady can’t find a Dr
Lady in video says …
Lady in video says there are no Doctors accepting new patients in Chatham Ontario….sniff sniff I smell BS. Dr. Allen, Angelita Rivera, Dr. Barral, Myrlinda Villarivera, Dr. Bernreuter, Raymond Charles, Dr. Boekhoud, Johannes Willem Frederik Gerret, Dr. Cameron, Robert Stewart, Dr. Clowater, Julie Lee, Dr. Dajczak, Stanislaw Peter, Dr. Depass, Ian Egbert, Dr. Dixon, Anthony Richard,? Dr. Evans, David, Dr. Fraser, Grant Robert Ian, Dr. Galbraith, Jack Walker
More? doctors have …
More? doctors have been moving to Canada since 2003ish than the other way around that is a fact. According to the OECD Canada has now overtaken the US in number of practicing GP’s. Call me a troll, sorry to hear that you hate the truth
No time for TROLLS
…
No time for TROLLS
Go be a Time Pirate elsewhere?
Actually since …
Actually since around 2003ish more doctors have moved to Canada from the? US, then the other way around.
This is no? longer …
This is no? longer correct as in 2007 according to the OECD Canada has overtaken the US in number of GP’s and is closing in on the # of Specialist. Canada actually has more family Doctors than the US per capita. Also note the US ranks near the bottom of the OECD for # of Dr’s…..far below average. If anything a US style system results in less Doctors, not more
Video is a crock of …
Video is a crock of shit. In Toronto, in a province where the DR shortage is the worst – just in 1 of several regions of the city there are over 80 family Drs taking on new patients. Press Ganey surveyed US hospitals and found the average ER wait time to? be 250ish minutes – CIHI confirmed that 90% of Canadian ER patients wait this time or lower. Furthermore the video indicates there is so few doctors in Canada in comparison to the US – ……continued
